Samsung Galaxy S III (16 GB)

Price: Rs. 33500 - Rs. 38000
The Good: The Samsung Galaxy S III which has been touted as the “iPhone killer” before its launch. And now it has created a mark in the mobile market by selling 10 million units of this handset in two months since its launch. The S III runs on Android 4.0 Ice cream Sandwich and is equipped with 4G LTE and an 8 megapixel camera.

The Bad: Away from all the positive points there are some let downs as well from Samsung with their flagship phone. The screen is too dim and the virtual voice assistant is a letdown. The size does prevent the phone from being portable.

The Bottom Line: In spite of the negative aspects the phone is a wonderful smartphone to invest in. It has high performing hardware and software. This smartphone sits comfortably on top of the table along with HTC One X.

Design: The size of the smartphone makes is slightly bulky to carry around, and it sure doesn’t fit well into your pocket. Thus making it slightly cumbersome to freely move around with the phone.
The Galaxy S III is an evolved form of their previous release Samsung S2. The S III has a more rounded shaped and which gives it a sleek and curvy feel to it. Though the back panel is a letdown. Even though it is an expensive phone the back panel is still the trademark flimsy one. But we have to admit that this flimsy back panel keeps the weight of the phone low.

Processor and Operating System:

A phone that is filled with powerful hardware and creative software will be having a powerful processor to help the user make the best use of all the features in the smartphone. Luckily for the users Samsung did keep a powerful processor in mind while developing the phone and it runs on a quad-core 1.4GHz Arm Cortex-A9 backed by 1GB RAM, making it as fast as possible.
The phone operates on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. In order to make the interface smoother Samsung has added their own TouchWiz interface. Though it may not compare to other phone’s interface, it does serve its purpose well when it comes to the widgets on the phone.

Features and Performance:

Screen: The Screen is huge and at times does prove to be inconvenient, it has an AMOLED touch screen. The 4.8 – inch screen has a beautiful HD resolution of 720 X 1280 pixels which is a big huge leap from the previous resolution in the S2 which was just 480 X 800 pixels. The screen is highly sensitive and responds well to even the lightest touch of mine.
Though it has a huge AMOLED screen and a high resolution the screen backlight is dim and when you are out in the sunlight viewing it does become tiresome and a task.

Battery Life: The more the features in the phone the lesser the battery lasts is something that we all are well aware by now. Same is the case with Galaxy S III. The phone is powered by a 2,100mAh battery. But that is also not enough for it to power all the features. You can consider yourself lucky if you can get more than one day of battery life.

Camera: The S III has an 8 mega pixel camera. Along with this it comes with a few new tricks that makes taking photographs fun. The camera has a zero shutter lag feature that allows the user to keep taking pictures without missing out on anything or having to wait for the previous picture to load and then return to the camera mode. It also has an option like the HTC One X that allows the user to take pictures and record a video simultaneously.

Taken too many picture and confused as to which one to keep and which one to discard, this smartphone comes with an interesting feature that tells you which is the best picture among the lot. It does this with the help of an algorithm based on smile detection and face recognition. And this is no gimmick it actually works and it would be worth listening to its advice.
The phone also features a front camera with 1.9 mega pixels.

Storage and Connectivity: S III comes in three storage variants, 16 GB, 32 BG and 64 GB. That is not all; all the three memory variant phones come with a slot for a microSD card which allows the user to increase their storage memory up to 64 GB.
This sounds too good to be true, but you can pinch yourself, it is not a dream. So now you can download all the apps you want, keep all your photographs and songs for as long as you wish.

At present Indian market have the 16GB and the 32GB variant, the 64GB one is still under lot of speculations and the company says that they will be releasing that model by the end of 2012.

Miscellaneous features: The phone is filled with many add on features which are exciting. The phone has an option of keeping all your data in it safe. It has face recognition and voice recognition software to unlock your phone. So you can make sure that what is in your phone is known only to you.

Many smartphones have the problem of battery drainage because of the back light staying on longer than needed. Well that worry can be put totally to rest with the S III as it has an eye-tracking technology that detects when you look at it, when it detects no eye movement it automatically turns off the back light. Though many a times this feature seems to not work and develop a mind of its own. At times it doesn’t switch on even if you are staring into it.

The user also has access to Dropbox along with two years of free online storage of up to 50 GB and the phone also has access to the one time Apple exclusive app Flipboard which allows viewing all social network updates at one place.

Price and Availability: The phone is available for an exorbitant Rs.38,400 (16GB) and Rs.41,500 (32GB). Samsung priced their smartphone along the lines of Apple’s iPhone. In spite of the high price the handsets are selling like hot cakes. Though for the people who are more price conscious it would do no harm in checking a few online portals like snapdeal.com, flipkart.com, ebay.in and infibeam.com which give a discount or Rs.5,000 on the market price.

Wrap-Up: After a long time there has finally come a phone that has it in it to dislodge the king of phones the Apple iPhone from its position on the throne of number one smartphone. S III has entered the playground and directly got a tickets to the biggies.
HTC’S One X, Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S III are the three musketeers of the smartphone market now.
