With $2.6 Billion, Bangalore Becomes The Heart of VCs


BANGALORE: There is no surprise in saying that Bangalore is the Heart of Venture Capitalists (VCs), also this could be proven from the global rankings of the cities that received the most VC funding in 2014. Bengaluru with @2.6 billion, stood 5th in the ranking. The list has been put together by Crunchbase, a global startup ecosystem database.

The list was topped by San Francisco that gained around $13 billion of VC investments; Bejing has taken 2nd position with $6.4 billion followed by New York, Palo Alto and Bengaluru.

Among the nation’s ranking, India received the 3rd largest VC funding ($4.6 billion) after the US ($58.9 billion) and China ($8.9 billion).

According to Ravi Gururaj, chairman of Nasscom Product Council, “This was kicked off by the historic election results which boosted investor confidence tremendously. Additionally, private equity investors worldwide, particularly those that missed out on the meteoric rise in Chinese startup valuations, flocked to high performing Indian consumer startups determined not to miss out on a fast ride on the India Startup Express," reports The Times of India.

It is not the very first time that Bengaluru has emerged up with strong results, if we look back in past a bunch of Bangalore based startups have raised hefty amount of fund convincing the VCs.

Ashok Soota founded IT solutions and services firm, Happiest Minds, raising $45 million in series A investment from Canaan Partners and Intel Capital, Naveen Tewari - founded InMobi, raised $200 million from Japan-based Softbank, RedBus raised $6 million in series C from Helion Venture Partners.

Japanese internet giant Softbank invested $627 million in Snapdeal and $210 million in Ola Cabs last year and recently Flipkart made the boom with its billion dollar funding.

Bangalore has always had a legacy advantage. Moreover, the big wave of venture capital happened when the Silicon Valley was booming, even the first venture capital fund was started by Indian institutions, way back in 1988 and was headquartered in Bangalore.
