Tax Authorities Employ 360 Degree Profiling for High Value Transactions

BENGALURU: As the income of a person rises, they start hiding their income to save part of their Income Tax payable. However strong the Law may be, such people still find way to somehow manage to change the shade of their money to ‘black’ and find a witty happiness in it. According to the reports of Economic Times, Tax Authority has come up with new measures to deal with such cheats, using a 360 degree profiling of people who file returns.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has come up with Non-Filers Management System (NMS), where they can hear about such cases from various sources. Recently, they received one crore information, based on which they could add 50 Lakh new tax payers to collect 7 Crore worth taxes.

CBDT Chairman Atulesh Jindal said that they have a very robust NMS, which they leverage to match the data that are being obtained from various resources. He also stated that CBDT has further expanded its areas that receive this information. "Our emphasis will be to broaden this NMS so that we have more robust data base, on the basis of which we have more widening of tax base," he said. Further, the department would apply non-intrusive method for broadening tax data base.

Within three weeks of time, CBDT plans to set up “e-Nivaran’—a comprehensive incorporated grievance redressal system and a pilot project in Delhi.

At present, CBDT receives taxpayer grievances via separate channels such as Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring, Aaykar Sampark Kendra, and online grievance redressal system. Various e-initiatives, the modalities for field formations and ways to bridge the communication gap were discussed over by the taxmen at the annual conference of tax administrators.

I-T Commissioners will accommodate town-hall meetings in their respective zones and communicate people on particulars of the scheme, as decided in the meeting. Najib Shah, Chairman, Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) said that Goods and Services Tax (GST) was on top of the schedule of the two-day meeting. Shah said that they have discussed about GST and CBEC that have crucial role to play and also discussed on IT preparation of CBEC to cope with the requirements of GST. He also states that they have trained many officers in the states as well.
