Sensex closes 68 points lower
Mumbai: A benchmark index for Indian equities Monday closed with a 68- point loss in lacklustre trading. The 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened the day lower at 17,874.16 points, ended the day 68.17 points or 0.38 percent lower at 17,864.97 points against its previous close at 17,933.14 points. The stock chart for 52-weeks has been given on left. At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty closed at 5,341.95 points, a loss of 0.37 percent or 19.8 points from its previous close at 5,361.75 points. Broader markets were also fairly dull, with the BSE midcap index ending 0.12 percent lower. The lower valued scrips, however, generated some buying interest with the BSE small cap index closing 0.32 percent up. Foreign funds have invested a net $5.2 billion in Indian stocks so far in 2010, a portion of which was absorbed by primary market offerings. The benchmark is up 2.2 per cent year-to-date. It had witnessed an 81 per cent jump in 2009, fuelled by foreign fund inflow of around $17.5 billion. Industrial output in Asia's third-largest economy grew at a slower-than-expected 15.1 per cent in February, and output is expected to ease further following moves to withdraw economic stimulus.
