Sensex Snaps 4-Day Winning Streak; Capital Goods, Banks Down


MUMBAI: The S&P BSE Sensex ended its four-day winning streak and closed nearly 80 points lower as investors booked profits in frontline banks, capital goods and oil & gas stocks which had moved sharply higher recently.

The 30-share index ended at 24,298.02, down 78.86 points or 0.32 per cent. It touched a high of 24419.54 and a low of 24156.47 in trade.

The Nifty ended at 7,252.90, down 22.60 points or 0.31 per cent. It touched a high of 7,287.15 and a low of 7,206.70 in trade.

The S&P BSE Midcap Index was up 1.34 per cent and the S&P BSE Smallcap Index gained 1.84 per cent.

Among the sectoral indices, the S&P BSE Capital goods Index was down 1.63 per cent, the S&P BSE Bankex was 1.07 per cent lower and the S&P BSE Oil & gas index declined 0.26 per cent.

The S&P BSE Realty Index was up 1.90 per cent, the S&P BSE IT Index gained 0.79 per cent and the S&P BSE FMCG Index moved 0.64 per cent higher.

Bharti Airtel, SBI, BHEL , Axis and L&T were among the index losers.

Bajaj Auto , Hindalco BSE, NTPC, Sesa and Coal India were among the major gainers.

The market breadth was positive on the BSE with 2087 gainers against 878 losers.

The foreign institutional investors sold shares worth 104.53 crore while domestic institutional investors were net sellers worth 656.83 crore on as per the provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.
