Few good questions please help solving it
Hi All
Below is a list of 5 questions. Please revert back with explanatory solutions. Even if the question can easily be solved by putting options, try giving a rough idea of your thought process.
Q1. It takes six days for 3 women and 2 men, working together, to complete a work. 3 men would do the same work 5 days sooner than 9 women. How many times does the output of a man exceeds that of a woman?
A) 3 times
B) 4 times
C) 5 times
D) 6 times
Q2. Mini and Vijay are quiz masters and are preparing for a quiz. In X minutes Mini makes Y questions more than Vijay. If it were possible to reduce the time needed by each to make a question by 2 minutes then in X minutes Mini would make 2Y questions more than Vijay. How many questions does Mini make in X minutes?
A) 1/4[2(X+Y) - sqrt(2Xsq + 4Ysq)]
B) 1/4[2(X-Y) - sqrt(2Xsq + 4Ysq)]
C) Either A or B
D) None
Q3. A watch gains by 2% per hour for 40
A) 6:55pm
B) 6:55:12pm
C) 6:55:24pm
D) None.
Q4. In a class 25% of the students were absent for an exam. 30% falied by 20 marks and 10% just passed because of grace marks of 5. Find the average score of the class if the remaining students scored an average of 60 marks and pass marks are 33.
A) 37.266
B) 37.6
C) 37.8
D) 36.93
Q5. A sum of Rs 36.90 is made up of 90 coins that are either 20 paise coins or 50 paise coins. How many 20 paise coins are there in total amount.
A) 47
B) 43
C) 27
D) 63

answer 5 27 coins when we convert it in rs we get 5 rs and 40 paisa
40 paisa is key here , no other choice provide it
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
answer 4: D
100 students
75 present
30 got 13 marks
10 got 28
35 remaining got 60 each
390 + 280 + 2100
2770/75 ===36.93

The correct answer is: D) 6 times
Both "banter" and "shaji" have solved the problem correctly. Only thing is "banter" has written the answer wrongly.
When you say ...
...suppose 1 woman (w) does 1 unit work/ day
and 1 man (m) does 6 units work/day.
that clearly indicates the answer is 6 times.
Anyways i feel "banter" either mentioned 5 times by mistake or got confused in the language of the problem (How many "times" does the output of a man "exceeds"...).
Here the keyword is "times" and not "exceeds". When both are there its the "times" that indicates the required parameter. If the problem says..."By how much does the output of a man "exceeds"... ", then clearly the answer is 5 times.

Hi;
The reverse gear is indeed a good option for such problems.
From statement that 3 men can do the job faster than 9 women by 5 days, its imperative the that :
1 man = 3+15/d women (where 'd' is the number of days taken by the men)
so the only possibility is that option B or D is correct, impling the d=5 or 15
Further from the first part of the problem that 3 women & 2 men do the job in 6 days implies that :
1man=6/(d-4) women, so d=5 is the correct option.
Therfore 1 man =6 women . So I would go for D as the correct answer.
The answer may please be confirmed by the author.

It seems very difficult to set up equations for this problem. Could
someone, with some hindsight, perhaps oblige ?
Anyway, with a little luck, this could still be solved by trial-and-error,
by plugging all available holes.
Suppose 90 units of work in all.
Further suppose 1 woman (w) does 1 unit work/ day
and 1 man (m) does 6 units work/day.
3 w + 2 m equates (by our supposition) to:
3 + 12 = 15 units per day i.e. a total of 90 units in 6 days.
Now it says: 3 men would do the same work 5 days sooner than 9 women.
3 m = 18 units per day - therefore work takes 90/18 = 5 days
9 w = 9 units per day - work takes 10 days i.e. 5 days longer,
as required.

All claims of sexism are hereby summarily denied - other ad hoc
claims and denials, contingent on such being extant, notwithstanding,
are, in this matter, not forestalled, as the case may be, and whatever
be it , given particularly, of course, that such be, at least to the extent
that such such be in opposition to any reasonable and reasonably
contrary view, for all practical bents and purposes, whereby the
practicality of aforementioned such, without and even notwithstanding
parts of the aforementioned, be deemed to be without contention, on
your part and mine.
Disagreements could, thus, evince a predilection, with your efforts
and mine, or without your consent or mine, as the case may be, to maybe
be fugacious - upon this reading that such be so, so my fervent desire.
This would moreover satisfy all dictates of convenience,
Yours, mine and ours. Goodbye and good luck.
