Book review
Media hype has invested IT with a very alluring mystique. But a powerful technology can be used both for good and evil. And IT is being used to serve both ends. It is, therefore, necessary to critically examine its societal impact so that one is not swept off his feet by its seductive powers.

And this what the author in this book seeks to do. As IT is the creation of the industrially advanced nations, its greatest impact is evidenced on those societies. The bulk of the book is focused on this theme. But as developing countries have also started making increasing use of it, its last section studies its impact in India.

About the author S S Gill, a career civil servant, retired as Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in 1985. The same year he was awarded the Padma Bhushan. From 1997 to 1998 he served as the first CEO of Prasar Bharati. Since his retirement he has been regularly contributing articles to leading national dailies and magazines. He has also written three books: The Dynasty—A Political Biography of the Premier Ruling Family of Modern India, The Pathology of Corruption and Gandhi—A Sublime Failure.
