Book review
Artist, musician, man of science, Upendrakishore Roychoudhury was a man of many parts. But it is for his writing for children that he is best remembered. This book is a selection of the best of his stories and the most fascinating of his characters: Goopy and Bagha, dedicated but unsuccessful musicians who are cast out of their homes because their music drives their families and neighbours crazy; Tuntuni, the little bird; the clever fox; Majantali Sarkar, the cat; the intrepid Granny Hunchback; and many others.

Swagata Deb?s vibrant translation brings Upendrakishore?s unique magic to a wider audience.

About the author Upendrakishore Roychoudhury (1863 – 1915) was a writer, illustrator, musician and amateur astronomer. He also introduced a wide array of print technologies in Bengal . His stories for children, including retellings of the Mahabharata and Ramayana, gave a great impetus to writing for children in Bengal . Perhaps his most lasting contribution was establishing Sandesh , the immensely popular Bengali magazine for children, which was later continued by his son, Sukumar Ray, the noted nonsense poet, and his grandson, Satyajit Ray, author and film-maker.
