About the author Upendrakishore Roychoudhury (1863 – 1915) was a writer, illustrator, musician and amateur astronomer. He also introduced a wide array of print technologies in Bengal . His stories for children, including retellings of the Mahabharata and Ramayana, gave a great impetus to writing for children in Bengal . Perhaps his most lasting contribution was establishing Sandesh , the immensely popular Bengali magazine for children, which was later continued by his son, Sukumar Ray, the noted nonsense poet, and his grandson, Satyajit Ray, author and film-maker.
