Book review
In all the Vaishnavaite temples is invariably erected a stone flag-post covered with a metal plate, with an image of Garuda on top. This is known as the Garuda-Stambha or Garuda Pillar. Besides this, another huge idol of Guruda is often installed in Vaishnavaite temples. In the first story of this volume is told the story of the birth of Garuda based on the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata.
The story of Prahlad given in this special issue is based on the Bhagawat Purana. When Prahlad asserts that Vishnu is everywhere-even in the pillar in front-Hiranyakashipu kicks the pillar and out comes Vishnu in the form of Narasimha, manlion, to the rescue of Prahlad.
In the third story, “The Churning of the Ocean” is told how Vishnu comes to the rescue of the Devas in procuring ‘amrit’, the divine nectar. This story is based on the Bhagawat Purana and the Mahabharata.
