I'm currently utilizing Microsoft Outlook with Google Gmail in conjunction
with my Motorola Droid and I'm pretty happy. There are a number of 'add-ons'
which will allow you to sync your Microsoft Outlook with Google (both
directions). I know some folks aren't very comfortable with all their contacts
being "in the cloud" but it really allows anywhere anytime access which is all
the rage these days.

I'm still searching myself for the best single user solution. In a corporate
environment Microsoft's Exchange and Outlook is the king. There's almost
nothing easier than Active Sync in my opinion. You just point your phone or
PDA to your Microsoft Outlook Web Access server and you've got your entire
enterprise and personal contact list with your calendar and email.

In a
small business or single user scenario the solution isn't so clear cut.
