I don't know what you mean by "write explinatory note on". Instead of letters
usually people prewritten cards (a more personal and sincere way of thanking a
person would be by snail mail, but today's youth sends email thank yous and
that's a less personal way to thank someone). There is no need to elaborate
on the words "thank you". You can thank them for a specific gift though as in
thanking for a specific wedding gift, or for their participation in something.
