I think group discussion is to check whether person has good communication
skills or not. Gd's are conducted mostly in job interviews by recruiters to
filter out candidates who do not have good communication skills. Gd is all
about what you say and how you say it.
You can practice GD at home with
friends to improve your interpersonal and comm skills.

As every one know the group discussion is the activity where so many people
puts thought and and every one have a different way of thinking so shearing of
thoughts may grow the ability to know things differently and grooming the
personality.
